At Natural Earth Garden Designs we design and construct dry stonewalls in any shape, size, or style. Whether you are looking to retain an eroding hillside or to add definition to an area, stonewalls are a beautiful addition to any property. If you like the old fashioned look of a round New England Fieldstone wall, or you prefer the more formal effect of a flat stonewall, we will work with you to achieve the look and style you desire.

 Our dry stonewalls are built so that every stone is interlocked together, creating superior strength and endurance. A dry stonewall is built to absorb the natural changes of the earth, so there is no cracking of mortar during the changing seasons. Another advantage of dry stonewalls is drainage, water is allowed to drain naturally through so that there is no built up pressure or moisture. Bluestone for walkways and patios is durable, attractive, and ideal for the climate in Maine. Bluestone is a natural stone that can also be used for pool decks, stone steps, or entryways. Both types of U.S. bluestone have long been used as pavers in hardscapes and are also commonly used in landscaping projects. Blustone is rare and can be expensive but it is very popular because it's rarer than other forms of natural stone being only available from certain parts of North America.

What is fieldstone?

Fieldstone is as it implys: it’s a stone that naturally occurs in fields, near or at the surface. It is often more round in shape and comes in a range of colors and is sometimes cut or split for architectural use.

FIELDSTONE DRYSTACK – THIN

Thin pieces are usually under 1″ to 2″ thick and about 5″ to 8″ wide. This stone is used to stack to make stone walls.

FIELDSTONE – MEDIUM

Pieces of fieldstone that are 2″ to 4″ thick with sizes varying from 8" to about 2'. This stone is often used in ponds and water features but can also be used as stepping stones and low incline stone steps.

RIVER ROUNDS & FLATS

A stone that is shaped and smoothed naturally from the movement of water down a stream. There are many purposes for this rock. Often for designing water features to garden bed edging. River rocks provide the possibility for a dry creek bed and many other creative projects.

 

GARDEN BOULDERS

Stone that is removed from the mountainside and weathered by exposure to the elements. It comes in various sizes and is normally used in ponds and water features, rock gardens and as accent stones in the landscape.
